In Rememberance

Remember me when I am gone away,

Gone far away into the silent land;

When you can no more hold me by the hand,

Nor I half turn to go, yet turning stay.

Remember me when no more day by day

You tell me of our future that you plann'd:

Only remember me; you understand

It will be late to counsel then or pray.

Yet if you should forget me for a while

And afterwards remember, do not grieve:

For if the darkness and corruption leave

A vestige of the thoughts that once I had,

Better by far you should forget and smile

Than that you should remember and be sad.

Your photo and poem made me realize that I have been so preoccupied that I missed observing September 11th. Thank you for reminding me even if I am a couple of days late. I'd never been to New York until after the Towers were attacked. My sister purchased me and my oldest son train tickets since I have a fear of flying and we went to ground zero the following Spring. I was stunned by the makeshift memorial that had been made on the plywood walls leading to the landing overlooking the scars where the towers had once stood. It also reminded me of how helpless and unable to wrap my mind around what had happened. My husband and I were living with our sons in Baltimore so we made our way to the inner harbor to join so many others who didn't know what to do, but just felt compelled to go out and connect with other Americans. Thank you for reminding me of something we should never forget.
