Sock It To Me Saturday

The kiddos here go back to school in exactly one month - school officially starts August 18!! Holy cow where has the summer gone? I printed out Miss S's school supply list this morning and about fell off my chair.....this is what she is required to have for 4th grade:

48 wooden pencils
1 package of colored pencils
1 box crayons
4 dry erase markers
1 dry erase eraser
2 highlighters (2 different colors)
6 composition notebooks
2 boxes of tissues
1 package of markers
1 package 3x5 index cards (colored)

1 ream (500 sheets) of white copy paper

1 protractor
12 pocket folders with brads
(blue, red, yellow, green, orange, purple 2 of each color)
5 tab dividers (2 packages)
1- 2 inch 3 ring view binder
3 packages of white loose leaf paper (wide rule)
4 glue sticks (no bottles)
1 pair sharp point scissors
1 ruler with centimeter and inch markings
2 packages of pencil top erasers

1 box of gallon size Ziploc bags (boys)
1 box quart size Ziploc bags (girls)

1 container Clorox cleaning wipes

1 container of hand sanitizer
$5.00 for a class T-Shirt for field trips

$5.00 National Geographic Kids Magazine

Multiplication Flash Cards (1 set)

Division Flash Cards (1 set)

Is it just me or is this a little extreme??? Even conservatively I'm going to be spending about $75 on JUST this stuff....that doesn't include a backpack, new lunch box and anything else she is going to need.

I have 2 boys entering the 4th grade and their list is just as extensive. I think it's the budget cuts in our school district that is causing the teachers to ask for more. Just think about the children whose parents can't afford to buy all of those items. I have been collecting items all summer for our boys. We were given the list on the last day of school in June. That made it easier to buy things as we went along instead of all at one time. You are right on the high cost!

Tracy and I were just looking at Raden's kindergarten supplies list, which includes things like Clorox wipes, glue, tissues, hand sanitizer, etc. I was tempted to blow up about what in hell our tax dollars are paying for in the educational system, and then I remembered we're at war. Still. Ten years later.

Food for thought: the total proposed defense spending budget for 2011 could alternatively pay for more than 10,000 elementary school teacher salaries in Albuquerque.

I'm guessing Sandoval & Rio Rancho counties are not to blame here.
